The everyday version

Manageable, with the right routine

That wavy-to-curly coat can look intimidating. In practice, a regular brushing and grooming schedule keeps most Bernedoodles looking great.

Coat and grooming

Wavier coats need brushing two to three times a week. Curlier, more Poodle-heavy coats need brushing every day or two to prevent matting, especially around the ears and legs. Most owners schedule a professional groom every 6 to 8 weeks.

  • A slicker brush plus a metal comb works well for most coat types.
  • Check behind the ears and under the collar for mats, these spots tangle first.
  • Nails, ears, and teeth: roughly every two to three weeks for nails, weekly ear checks if the ears hang low.

Exercise and enrichment

Bernedoodles inherit intelligence and drive from the Poodle side, along with a calmer, less intense energy from the Bernese side. Most do well with a daily walk plus some form of mental enrichment, they are not a breed that needs hours of hard exercise.

  • Puzzle feeders and short training sessions satisfy the Poodle side's need to think.
  • Standard-size Bernedoodles can overheat in hot weather because of their coat, watch for signs of heat stress in summer.
  • They tend to bond closely and do best with regular company rather than long stretches alone.

Diet

A high-quality diet built around real animal protein supports coat health and joint development, especially in standard-size Bernedoodles carrying more weight on growing joints. Large or giant breed puppy formulas are worth asking your vet about for standards.

  • Ask your breeder what the puppy has been eating and transition gradually over 7 to 10 days.
  • Fresh water daily, a fountain can help encourage puppies that are lazy drinkers.
  • Check in with your vet on portions and growth rate through the first 12 to 18 months.

Vet care

Beyond standard vaccinations and annual exams, ask your vet about hip and elbow monitoring as your Bernedoodle grows, even if the parents tested clear. Standard-size dogs benefit from periodic joint checks given the size they carry from the Bernese side.

  • Keep vaccination and deworming on the schedule your vet recommends for puppies.
  • Spay or neuter timing: discuss with your vet, often later for standard-size dogs to support joint growth.
  • DM and vWD are both recessive conditions, ask your vet about periodic screening if the parents' DNA results are unclear.
